The Mystique of Dubuque

By Mike

MystiqueQuel désastre! I hope I don’t get sued!

I’ve been blogging about “the mystique of Dubuque” since January 2007, more or less.

And all of the sudden, the Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino announces that it’s changing its name, à la mode, to Mystique. Mais je te jure que c’est vrai!

Why the name Mystique? According to the TH, casino officials hope to tap into Dubuque’s French heritage by implementing a new Parisian theme and $10 million renovation.

The French-sounding name Mystique is “exotic, thrilling, compelling, sexy and alluring.” Plus it has a “que” ending, like Dubuque! Clever, no?

Besides, rival Diamond Jo Casino “really upped the ante” through their own $84 million expansion last year.

Ah, well. C’est la vie! Instead blogging about the mystique Dubuque, maybe I should focus on Dubuque as cliché.

The whole “French heritage” element to the name choice is sort of interesting, too. Sure, Julien Dubuque was a French Canadian. But Dubuque’s heritage is more German and Irish than French. But how would that fit into a new name?

Yes, Dubuque sure is proud of its Irish heritage, what with the more bars per capita of about anywhere… I think since everyone’s so damn proud of the Irish-ness, It should have been named “Cap’n McO’Paddy’s Lucky Clover Pot O’ Gold! Arrrddddd Laddies, Gamble yer fourtune away, and cram the tasty spuds down yer gullet while chugging fine irish whiskey!
